"It behooves every man to remember that the work of the critic is of altogether secondary importance, and that, in the end, progress is accomplished by the man who does things."

— Teddy Roosevelt

Subgroup on DC Public Education

This focus group will attempt to find policy solutions for the current issues that low income and minority students in the District of Columbia face. By using the resources at the GW community, we also aim to find ways to provide research to those that have the power to institute change in the District. Please check back to this page for more information as the year progresses.

In determining Roosevelt's role in the policy community, the Subgroup on DC Public Education aims to provide assistance at the local level to high school students and their parents in preparation for applying to and funding college.  By drafting policy to bring the GW community into close contact with low income and minority students in the District, the Subgroup on DC Public Education hopes to:

  • Make the college application process less intimidating to low income families
  • Provide resources to students in the form of editing college application essays and assisting in finding scholarships
  • Mentoring students to ease their adjustment to the college setting
  • Empowering GW students in shaping the socioeconomic diversity of higher education one student at a time

By focusing on the local government and local organizations, the Subgroup hopes that by building networks with the local community that Roosevelt will become a research resource to those with the power to intitiate change.
